Bob the Turkey Killed by Car

Woodstock's unofficial mascot was hit by a driver coming down Main Street on Sunday.

A Woodstock legend was killed this weekend.

Drivers frequently saw the unofficial mascot of downtown wandering around his own designated wildlife sign, skipping down the tracks in front of the Serenade subdivision and occasionally chasing police cars.

According to Bob the Turkey's Facebook page, he was hit and killed by a driver coming down Main Street on Sunday.

This was posted on the page around 4 p.m.:

"We are so very sad to report that we have confirmed what some of Bob's friends have posted below. Bob was hit by a vehicle earlier today and is no longer with us. We are so thankful for all the happy memories we have of him and how in some ways he brought the community of Woodstock together. We love you so much, Bob! You were a beautiful, hilarious, fun, and brave turkey. We will miss you more than you will ever know. Rest in peace."

The community has left an overwhelming amount of messages for Bob on his Facebook page, which has more than 1,500 likes.

  • "Driving to work in the morning will never be the same," Bridget Russell said.
  • "We will dearly miss you," Madison Morgan said. "Everybody loves you soooo much! Hope you have fun chasing police cars in heaven."
  • "So very sad," Alison Shaw said. "We will miss you tremendously Bob! You brought so much fun and happiness to us all. Downtown Woodstock just won't be the same without you!"

How will you remember Bob the Turkey?

This is so sad! I loved living in a community where I could say I have a turkey that just roams the streets and everyone accepts it and loves it. That makes Woodstock stand out. I looked for Bob every time I drove down Main Street and always looked in his little "hole" to see if he was hiding out. He will be missed in this community.

Sad news for those of us who have grown to get a great chuckle every time we were able to show our children a wild turkey.....Bob will be greatly missed!

I am sure that everyone in Woodstock was curious as to why it took so long. That turkey had 9 (or more) lives. There is Bob's brother that roams the street on 140 and pecks on the glass screen door of the house just beyond the castle. I am sure he is related somehow to Bob. I sure get a good chuckle everytime I pass. He WILL be missed!

Deborah, we see the turkey on 140 next to the castle every morning-- Let's hope he stays out of the road! We were happy he was still there the week after Thanksgiving.

My 5 year-old daughter called him "Bacon Rainbow" because of his coloring. He will be missed. Thanks for reporting on this Patch!

Well there is another Turkey who roams every day on Kemp Rd off of Woodstock rd. The turkey had an injured leg but now has recovered completely. The turkey visits most of the houses here every day and hangs out with people whenever it sees you. While it was injured the county or dnr gave a neighbor permission to kill the turkey which I guess is still valid. I believe it is illegal to kill her in any other circumstance. They see the turkey as a nuisance because it eats their flowers. So if you want to try to help this one please give the county or the dnr a call about it...

Allen have you reached out to Cherokee County Animal Control? If so, what did they say?

Animal control does not have a provision to deal with a wild turkey. I was told the officers themselves may or may not be willing to help you capture it but that they have no way to relocate it. I do not live in the US anymore just visiting and I'm not able to help out anymore as I'm leaving soon so I just wanted to put it out there and see if anyone may notice and take on its cause. Its a very friendly bird who has visited me every day while staying here and I hate to see something happen to it. It would take someone who knows what they are doing to catch it.

To the moderator PLEASE REMOVE MY PREVIOUS POSTS! I would not have imagined it but due to my posts on facebook and this site we had poachers show up in our yard today after the turkey with the intention of killing it who said they had heard it from the internet....And if my posts do not get removed then poachers be warned do not even think about showing up to kill this animal it will end badly for you..
