Cherokee Detention Center Inmate Commits Suicide

William Leroy Engle was arrested on June 17 and charged with possession of a controlled substance and operating vehicle with a suspended/revoked license, records from the Cherokee County Detention Center show.

 

A Douglasville man on Tuesday committed suicide inside his cell at the Cherokee County Detention Center.

William Leroy Engle, 42, hanged himself, and authorities pronounced him dead on the scene, according to 11Alive and the Cherokee Ledger-News.

He was arrested on June 17 and charged with possession of a controlled substance and operating vehicle with a suspended/revoked license, records from the Cherokee County Detention Center show.

Engle, who appeared in the June 21 edition of Cherokee County Mug Shots, a weeknight feature on all three Cherokee Patch sites, also was being held for another agency, records indicate.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is handling the death investigation, reports from 11Alive and the Ledger-News say.
