Funeral Set for Slain Marine

Visitation will be held for Zach Gamble at the Woodstock Funeral Home from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Funeral arrangements have been made for the Acworth Marine who died Sunday afternoon from head trauma suffered in Smyrna.

The Woodstock Funeral Home will hold visitation for Zach Gamble, 34, Wednesday from 3 to 8 p.m. for friends and family.

The funeral will be held at Woodstock First Baptist at 2 p.m. Thursday, and burial will follow at Rolling Hills Memory Gardens in Acworth next to Gamble's father, James.

Gamble's body will lie in state an hour before Thursday's service so people can pay their respects.

Survivors include Gamble's 7-year-old son, Luke; a sister, Nikki Gamble of Acworth; his mother and stepfather, Tina and Leon Robbins of Gainesville; and grandparents Bernice and Howard Cook, according to the obituary posted on the Justice for Zach Facebook page.

Gamble was born Jan. 27, 1978, in Marietta, graduated from Brandon Hall School in Sandy Springs and earned his bachelor's in political science from Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis.

He served in the Marine Corps from 2001 to 2005 as a corporal and squad leader and did two tours in Iraq.

He was most recently a corporate planner/buyer with Uni-Select in Kennesaw.

Gamble died Sunday after being taken off life support at WellStar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta. He never regained consciousness after suffering severe head trauma in a Smyrna apartment complex two weeks ago.

The Cobb County Police Department and Gamble's family are searching for answers as to what caused his death.

He was accidentally struck by a taxi driver in the Concord Apartment Complex parking lot early March 25, but police said they believe that the taxi did not cause the most serious injuries, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution said.

Witnesses told Cobb police that Gamble was at a party at the complex where he was asked to leave, and an argument took place outside, Acworth Patch reported.

The official cause of death is pending the Cobb medical examiner's report.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404-577-8477.

Gamble had registered for this month's Fight for Air Climb to raise money for the American Lung Association, and donations in his memory may be made at action.lung.org/goto/zachgamble.
