Indie-Folk Duo Delights Audience with Humorous Originals
Dustin and Adrienne Cottrell comprise folk duo 'Tortoise and Hair' and played a mostly upbeat set on Saturday night for Woodstock Coffeehouse.
Dustin and Adrienne Cottrell of Tortise and Hair brought their unique chemistry to the stage Saturday night for an engaging performance. They played multiple, well-composed covers, including some Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson and Joni Mitchell. However, the audience responded most to a humorous original song named 'Argus' after their dog.
They said people seem to like 'Argus' because it's so peppy and fun. Upbeat with a positive message seems to be a winning formula.
Both Dustin and Adrienne earned Bachelor of Arts degrees in music from Florida State University. Dustin focused on jazz, performing mostly on piano throughout the Southeast, while Adrienne studied classical piano. Adrienne continued studying religion.
The Cottrells have been dating since age 16, and their ability to read and respond to each other on stage plays a role in their success.
“One thing I always strove for as a jazz musician was an ease of interaction with the other players in the real time performance. It's difficult to achieve and takes sophisticated musicianship. However, I feel I have that naturally with Adrienne, much more so than in other situations I've been in,” Dustin explained.
Adrienne agreed saying she knew her place by Dustin.
“Writing songs and making music with Dustin is really where I belong,” said Adrienne.
Their musical abilities stemmed from their families, and from as young as 4 years old, they were required to take piano lessons. They performed at church during their earlier years, and then throughout Gainesville, FL, where they grew up.
Their songwriting is perhaps what sets them apart. They are always looking for fresh ways to say things and consistently succeed.
“I have learned not to force a song," Adrienne said. "I jot down ideas or lines that mean something to me, but I'm not afraid to let them stew in my brain for awhile. Writing a good song takes work, but it's important for me to know when it's the right time."
During the Saturday show, Adrienne warned her friends and family that they might become song material if they are not careful. The pair's songs usually include honest observations and a refreshing sense of humor. They portray a genuine and refreshing image, something that brings loyal audience members back for more.
Tortise and Hair have two albums available on iTunes: 'Tortise and Hair' and 'Front Row Seat'. They are excitedly planning a third album for this summer.
