After a series of approvals, meetings and votes this year, Woodstock citizens can now drive to the store and buy alcohol on Sunday.

It began earlier this year when Gov. Nathan Deal signed legislation to allow counties and cities to vote on Sunday alcohol sales.

The Woodstock City Council was quick to approve the referendum in late May putting the vote in the citizens' hands to decide on the issue at the Nov. 8 general elections. The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners, however, took some time to put the referendum on the ballot, but finally passed a resolution Aug. 16.

The referendum passed at 69.08 percent, 822 in favor and 368 against, for the city at the Nov. 8 election.

The mayor and City Council adopted an ordinance Monday, Nov. 14 to finalize the process. The election results were certified Tuesday, Nov. 15. With the adoption of the ordinance and the certification of the election, Sunday sales by businesses already licensed for the package sales of malt beverages, wine and/or distilled spirits in the City of Woodstock are able to begin selling today, said City Manager Jeff Moon.

Restaurants in many places already allow sales by the drink on Sundays, but this measure passed by the voters will allow packaged alcohol sales in liquor stores, grocery stores and convenience stores between 12:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m.

There is no increase in the alcohol license fee or any additional permits/licenses required for Sunday package sales, Moon said. No further action is needed by already licensed establishments in order to begin selling packaged alcoholic beverages today.  

March 6 is when Georgia will hold presidential primaries, and that’s when the next batch of Sunday sales measures will hit the ballot. Marietta, Cobb County and Athens are among the localities that will vote on the issue that day.
