Take Up Backyard Birding

Escape from your daily parenting pressures without leaving home.

My late mother loved her backyard birds. She set out feeders, baths and houses year round and spent hours watching her feathered friends as they weathered each season. She actually built her own birdhouses and knew the proper dimensions and characteristics required for particular species.

Until recently, I did not allow myself to slow down long enough to learn about and enjoy creating a bird feeding habitat in my own backyard. But now I am hooked!

I still have much to learn about the different species of birds in our community, their dietary requirements and seasonal considerations. Thankfully, Wild Birds Unlimited offers expert advice, unique products, food supplies and everything else I need to pursue my new hobby. From my very first visit, owners Scott and Willie Lemmon made me feel welcome with a free cup of coffee as I browsed, asked dozens of questions and learned about backyard birding.

Backyard birding is a great escape for busy moms! It is a hobby that requires no travel and can be enjoyed in the evening or throughout the day, even if for five to 10 minutes at a time. It’s affordable, and getting started is as easy as setting out a feeder with some seed.

When the birds begin to flock around your feeders, you quickly learn the different varieties and their distinct behaviors. Some are shy, others less so. I love to watch the avian politics as birds jockey for position at each feeder. Don’t worry, their behavior is a lot more civil than our own standing on line at the local Walmart.

Become a backyard birder. You won’t regret it.
