Thousands Fill Church for Dental Clinic
The first patient was at the door at 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
The Georgia Mission of Mercy made its debut this morning on the First Baptist Church of Woodstock campus. Thousands of individuals wrapped around the megachurch hoping to get inside for the free dental clinic provided by the Georgia Dental Association and its Foundation for Oral Health.
The clinic, which targeted low- and no-income Georgians, provided dental procedures ranging from cleanings to fillings and even root canals. Individuals traveled as far as Valdosta to camp out to receive free dental services.
More than 300 dentists and 1,600 volunteers will spend two days helping at least 2,000 children and adults with their dental problems. The program chairmen were overwhelmed with the response and turnout. The first 1,000 patients had already arrived by 6 this morning. One man reserved his seat at 10:30 a.m. Thursday insuring he was first in line.
The doors will open again Saturday at 5 a.m., and the first 1,000 individuals will be seen. Patients that were turned away today can return Saturday.

What a sorry indictment of the US health system. Never mind bankers, health insurance companies are killing this country - literally. Making profits by denying people treatment is simply wicked.

A beautiful event, and an amazing story that illuminates so many aspects of what's wrong with our country, and what's right.

It is so wonderful to see that there is some very much needed care to our own on our own land!!! It is about time that we start looking after our own people FIRST!!!!!

Businesses are supposed to make a profit, Guy. Is it acceptable to you that a public entity (the Fed. Govt.) takes $1 from one person to "care for" those in need but uses up about 75 cents before the care gets to the needy person? Notice how much the private sector along with people of faith can do in 2 days. And with volunteers. If the couple of thousand people had received this treatment via the government, it would have cost millions of dollars I'm sure. Because of the generosity and compassion of these volunteers we won't have to fund a program......no pensions, no benefits. Just results.

@Larry...This was a wonderful charitable event hosted by First Baptist and 1900 volunteers from all over the state. All of them deserve our thanks! That said, this was only one event in one fairly affluent area and it attracted 2,000 people. Imagine the need for the entire state...is it ten, twenty, fifty thousand or more? Are these same volunteers going to offer their services free every weekend? Of course not! The scale of need is more than the volunteers can handle and this is exactly why an improved Government-Sponsored healthcare option is needed. As to the 75 cent government cost, you're wrong. The medicare & medicaid systems operate more efficiently than the health insurance industry -- i.e. there is more medicare/medicaid service per dollar than via health insurance.

I'm British Larry, and we have something called the NHS where everybody in work pays in the equivilant of $50 a month, and everybody gets treated, free of charge - no health insurance to deny your treatment, no expensive monthly premiums to cough up, just the National Insurance - which is the same if your minimum wage or a millionaire. Health insurance exists in the UK, but it is entirely voluntary and just gains you access to a swankier hospital if you want it. In the Uk I've had six broken bones, multiple dental treatments and the total cost at point of use? Nada, nil, zip.
I;ve been here two and a half years and I don't think I can count how much I've spent on me, my wife and my son already, despite the fact we've been to the doctors twice between us.
I'm glad more and more Americans are waking up to what the rest of the world already knows. That Healthcare isn't a privilege - it's a right.

Wow, "Healthcare isn't a privilege - its a right" Really Guy? Are you a US Citizen? I don't think that is in the constitution or the Bill of Rights. The UK is in the sewer, isn't that why you are here to make a good living?
Not to mention spiritually dead along with Riots, Church's turning into Tattoo parlors. Yeah, they have a great system there. Maybe you should take your socialist ideas back there.

It's hard not to politicize such an amazing event that yet again demonstrates the generosity of the human spirit and the power of the faith based community. I was so moved by the video clip and all that it represented about our society in a few short minutes.
