It's that time again! Sun, Beach, Pool, Lake!
Many clients ask me questions about their hair problems during the summer months.I can give you suggestions on how to protect your hair and color while enjoying the outdoors.
First, If you are going to be in any water it is important to protect your hair as you would your skin. Before you go into the water you should get your hair completely wet. By doing this you have already created a barrier between your hair and the chemicals, salt, or pollutants found in bodies of water. Soaking your hair down with water will make the hair absorb all the water it can handle. Therefore, once the hair is saturated the "bad" water will not absorb into your hair. To give additional protection, after you wet it and gently towl dry your hair, put a conditioner in and leave it.This will also keep the hair soft.
When you decide that you had enough fun in the water for the day or just a period of time you should immediately rinse your hair using a small amount of shampoo and gently massage it in. Reapply conditioner and comb thru. At this point, you will only need to wet the hair again just before entering back into the water and keep repeating these steps every time.
Chlorine is the absolute worst for hair! It can destroy the integrity of the hair, cause fading of chemically treated hair, make it very dry, brittle and hard to detangle and the worst is picking up green tones in blonde hair. If you are someone who spends a good portion of your time in the pool, you will need to follow the advise listed above and also you will need to Detox your hair of the Chlorine. A detox shampoo and conditioner should be used at least once a week if your a heavy user of the pool.
REDKEN offer a NEW Nature's Rescue line that will help detox the hair and keep your blonde or chemically treated hair fresh.
We offer this line at our salon. If being around water is the least of your concerns, but you spend alot of time in the sun, here is some suggestions to protect against the sun.
The best thing to use on your hair during the sunny days is a Leave-in conditioner with UVB and UVA protection. A Thermal protector is also recommended to prevent fading of color and drying out hair. Try wearing a hat when possible. If you follow these simple steps you will have happy hair.
We carry a wide range of retail and can recommend to you the proper salon products needed for your hair.
