Barney's foster mom took a 3:30 a.m. call from a volunteer at Murray County Animal Shelter who said he had only about an hour before meeting his end. She said that when a volunteer makes that kind of call it means that a particular dog has been so special that he has worked his way into the hearts of both shelter workers and volunteers. Barney, aka Beagle Boy Sweetie, was precisely that dog. Volunteers have to work from a list of dozens of dogs each week.  The mentality of a volunteer is to place as many dogs as possible and hope that their work was enough. To prevent the damaging effects of …

Faith was discovered by a county animal control officer after she had been left in a house for more than a month without food or water. Her owner had been taken to a nursing home and Faith had been left behind. By the time she was rescued, poor Faith was extremely emaciated and barely able to walk. We soon discovered that the persistent food deprivation had left Faith almost skeleton-like, blind in one eye, and with poor balance. Her condition was so bad that euthanization was considered. However, she did not seem to be in any distress, wagged her tail quite a bit, and loved attention. …
Applebees has a survivor's spirit and heart. She is so appreciative of being saved from starvation. She greets everyone she sees submissively with a wagging tail and when being petted will roll over for a belly rub. On June 4, 2012, Angels rescuers found her in an Applebees parking lot as they returned from a save at a nearby shelter. At first sight the rescuers thought she was a cat, but then realized she was a puppy alone in a parking lot on a six lane road. The rescuers called to her and Applebees ran and jumped in their car. Applebees was taken to the vet, found to be healthy, given her …

“My foster mommy says I am beautiful, but I have never heard of that dog breed before. When I first met my foster mommy I was so scared. Lots of people had been mean to me, but after meeting my mommy, I realized that I didn't need to be scared anymore. My mommy looked me directly in the eyes and told me that I was safe and I believed her. “She tells me every day that I am a good girl. I don't go to the potty in the house and I like to rest quietly in my crate during the day. I really enjoy playing with my mommy's other dogs, but mommy says that I am not hyper. I don't know what that means, …
Alexandra is a special needs cat waiting for someone who has a heart of pure gold. She has had about as tough a life as a cat can have according to the Angels Among Us Rescue Program. For almost two years Alexandra lived as a feral cat in a busy business district. She had two litters of kittens born outside...and gave birth to a third litter shortly after one of Angels volunteers was successful in trapping her. Alexandra remains a feral cat, but is "oh-so-sweet," according to her foster parent. "She so much deserves a warm and safe home where she will be accepted on her own terms." Her …

Rarely, however, do we write the happy endings.  So, from a rural shelter on death row, to the City of Lights, here is your happy story for Friday.  For more local news, sign up for the  free Woodstock-Towne Lake Patch newsletter, like us on Facebook or follow us on …
