Woodstock Coffeehouse hosted one last night of music on Saturday before the business relocates to newly renovated Downtown Woodstock. The musicians included some young Coffeehouse performers, Bruce Gibson and friends, and Zsler and The Day Trippers. Lots of loyal customers came out to show their appreciation for the long-standing Coffeehouse, which some have been visiting religiously since it first opened. The show was a success, and many enjoyed saying their goodbyes to the old location and discussing the new. Local musician Gibson was joined by a fellow frequent performer, Richard Cooper, …
Woodstock Coffeehouse hosted musician Stephen Reynolds on Friday, who wears his Rasta colored shoelaces to nearly every show. Reynolds has a distinctly reggae musical style that is popular with the audience. He said he plays his guitar like it is three separate instruments: a bass, drum and lead. “I go in and out of the off beat reggae style within each song, and I think that change within the song is my trademark. Sublime did it with their music, changing in one song from a punk beat to a hip hop beat to a reggae beat,” Reynolds explained. “That style just came spontaneously to me over the …
Musicians Jeannie Caryn, Marc Lawson and Tom Flugum each played solo sets during a lively show Friday at Woodstock Coffeehouse. These three artists' styles flowed together well, and the night was a success. Show opener Tom Flugum has been touring local venues with Jeannie for almost a year, and played some popular covers. “Jeannie is a great singer, and we always support each other and look for opportunities to play out," Flugum said. "We have styles and taste that compliment each other, so I was very happy to sit in with her and play at the coffeehouse. The show closer, pianist Lawson, has …
Woodstock Coffeehouse hosted pianist, vocalist and songwriter Pete Morley Friday night, creating an enjoyable evening for everyone. Morley is friend to frequent performers Kevin Carlson and Bruce Gibson. Morley played at a Woodstock Coffeehouse open mic and decided to come back for more. “It's got a great vibe. Everyone is really supportive,” Morley said. This California-born musician enjoys visiting Woodstock, both for its small-town feel and its nightlife. Morley said he especially likes the downtown scene and has performed shows there before. “I'm an architect by trade, so I appreciate …
Woodstock Coffeehouse hosted quite a crowd Friday for David McLeod's performance, which included lots of rhythm guitar and both creative originals and covers. McLeod traveled to Woodstock from his home in Grant Park for the show. “I absolutely love playing live most of the time. There is no feeling in the world like the one being robustly applauded delivers,” McLeod said. During his performance, he invited Woodstock Coffeehouse's music coordinator Robin Roberts on stage to accompany him. Roberts lent her vocals to a couple of songs, making McLeod's set all the more dynamic. During his early …
Dustin and Adrienne Cottrell of Tortise and Hair brought their unique chemistry to the stage Saturday night for an engaging performance. They played multiple, well-composed covers, including some Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson and Joni Mitchell. However, the audience responded most to a humorous original song named 'Argus' after their dog. They said people seem to like 'Argus' because it's so peppy and fun. Upbeat with a positive message seems to be a winning formula. Both Dustin and Adrienne earned Bachelor of Arts degrees in music from Florida State University. Dustin focused on jazz, performing …
Saturday night at Woodstock Coffeehouse was a little unusual, in a very good way. Instead of just one performance, the crowd at the coffeehouse enjoyed two separate sets. Marc Lawson, who opened for Jamie DiCiurcio of Next Best Friend, started things off with a piano cover of “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen. “That song has been covered many times, but there is something timeless about it that I love,” said Lawson, who has been playing piano since 2003. Lawson also composes orchestra arrangements, one of which will be on his new EP. Though he is by no means any less talented than the next …
Jeremy Cochran, Georgia resident for all of his 33 years, grew up in Woodstock and returned on Saturday to perform a live set at Woodstock Coffeehouse. “The coffeehouse is a place where being an original artist is appreciated. Most bars you play at only want to hear covers, and the people are there mostly to get drunk. When you play the coffeehouse you know some people are genuinely listening, and that is golden,” Cochran said. Though he said he prefers to play with a band, he does not avoid solo gigs. “I can rock a solo gig and sometimes enjoy that as well, especially if I have time to …
Self-taught acoustic guitarist Aaron Gibson amazed the audience at Woodstock Coffeehouse on Saturday with his finger-picking skills. Gibson, Georgia resident for five years, said he originally learned guitar in response to a challenge. “Initially, I learned guitar to show up a kid that was on my bus freshman year of high school who told me I couldn't learn 'Tears in Heaven'. Then I learned it and started really enjoying the guitar." His mainly instrumental set included lots of originals, which he says come naturally to him. “If I had to pick one aspect of my music that I like, it is that for …
Editor's Note: The Chords from the Coffeehouse series will be moving to Tuesdays. Though the impending New Year celebrations stole much of Woodstock Coffeehouse's usual crowd on the 31st, Georgia resident Joshua Miller gladly played his set for the modest audience as midnight drew closer. Miller, 26, said he enjoys performing live shows for the chance to let others experience his music. "I love to play live. I've had 13 years of playing for the wall, and it's served its purpose, but the thrill of sharing my music with others is an addiction I have no plans of giving up any time soon." Miller'…
Though no show was scheduled for last Friday night at Woodstock Coffeehouse, musician and Georgia resident for 17 years, JJ Posway gladly obliged the eager crowd by agreeing to play an impromptu live show. Posway has played several shows at the Coffeehouse, along with attending countless open mics on Mondays. He is always a crowd favorite, and tends to bring other musicians on stage during his performances. He was joined by vocalist Holli Griffin during his latest official show Nov. 26. "She's such a fantastic singer, and I always look forward to her playing, whether it's an open mic or one …
Woodstock Coffeehouse hosted what turned into a lively Christmas party on Saturday night, featuring local musicians Colorado, Caleb Fox, Jonathan Peyton & Anna Woods, and Brim & Company. The music was an entertaining blend of folk rock, indie and acoustic folk styles and included instruments such as banjos and a tambourine. Jonathan Peyton, employee of Woodstock Coffeehouse and REI, said he loves playing at the coffeehouse. "I chose Woodstock Coffeehouse because it's like home to me. It's where I played my first concert. I feel like playing a concert there is in some ways a …
Multi-talented songstress and Alabama resident Abby Parks graced the Woodstock Coffeehouse Friday night with her music, filling the air with her unique sound. She brought with her a small army of supporters, including Sandy Serge of Serge Entertainment Group. "Abby rocks," Serge said. "I love the variety with all the instruments. I would come to see her again." Parks played the guitar, banjo and harmonica with equal expertise, creating a musical set that was varied and captivating. "I play guitar, 12-string guitar, mandolin, harmonica and most recently have been performing with the banjo, too…
Woodstock Coffeehouse was filled with the funky sounds of Richard Cooper's music Nov. 19, making the coffee taste even better. Cooper, a talented, young Georgia resident for 12 years played both the piano and the acoustic guitar to accompany his smooth voice. He describes his style as a mix of funk, r&b, rock, soul, jazz, blues, hip hop and pop: hefty claim that he fulfills. He is covered greats such as Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix. His soulful renditions of classic hits seem to do the originals justice. To conclude his set Friday, he jammed out to a conglomerate of Weezer and oldies, putting a…
