American Legion Annual High School Oratorical Scholarship Program

American Legion Post 316, Woodstock, is pleased to announce the annual High School Oratorical Scholarship Program for 2014. Eligible participants are bona fide high school students under the age of twenty years on the date of the National Contest, which will be held in Indianapolis, Indiana on April 4-6. 2014. The contestant must also be citizens of or lawful permanent residents of the U.S. Students of public, religious, military, private or a state accredited home school may participate.

The Program starts at the local Post level and winners progress to the District, Area and State contest. The State contest will be held on Saturday March 1, 2014. Cash prizes through the State championship can total as much as $2,500. At the National contestants are awarded $1,500 for each level he or she attains and scholarships of $18,000, $16,000 and $14,000 respectively, for first, second and third place finishes.

The local Post 316 contest will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2014, at the William G. Long Senior Center Woodstock,GA. Each contestant is to deliver an eight to ten minute prepared oration using some aspect of the Costitution of the United States, with emphasis on the duties and obligations of a citizen to our government. Additionally, an extemporaneous three to five minute oration is given by each contestant, based on one of four Constitutional Amendment which is selected at that time of the contest. Judging is done by specially selected  judges.
