The Play concerns socialite and novelist Charles Condomine, who invites the eccentric clairvoyant, Madame Arcati, to his dinner party to hold a séance, hoping to gather material for his next book. While consumed in a trance, Madame Arcati unwittingly summons the ghost of his first wife, the clever and insistent Elvira.  Only Charles can see and communicate with Elvira, and he grows increasingly alarmed once he realizes that his dead wife is planning to kill him so that he can join her on the other side. Elvira proceeds to sabotage Charles’ current marriage to Ruth and mayhem ensues. As the worldly and unworldly personalities clash, Ruth is accidentally killed, “passes over”, joins Elvira and the two blithe spirits haunt the hapless Charles into perpetuity.
