Action Church Serves As Shelter From Cold Weather

The church in Canton will open tonight at 5 p.m. as temperatures are expected to fall into single digits.

Anyone in Cherokee County who needs to seek shelter from the blistering cold weather can head to Action Church tonight.

At the request of the city of Canton, the church will open its doors tonight at 5 p.m. for those who need a warm place to stay tonight, according to its Facebook page.

The church will serve chili around 6:30 p.m.

The church is located at 271 Marietta Road in the old MacFarland's store space. For more information, call Tommy Simmons at (678) 357-9948.

Marietta-based MUST Ministries will also open two locations for those needing shelter: the Elizabeth Inn Campus, located at 55 Elizabeth Church Road (call 678-218-4531 for more information); and the Extension, located at 1507 Church Street Ext. Northwest (call 770-590-9075 for more information).

High temperatures throughout Cherokee will not make it out of the 20s today, and wind chill values could be as low as 4 degrees below zero, according to the National Weather Service

Residents should expect tonight's temperature to drop to around 6 degrees, with wind chills as low as 10 degrees below zero.

In the city of Woodstock, police officers have an "ongoing outreach" to people who may not have a warm place to stay, said Woodstock Police Department spokesperson Brittany Duncan.

"Officers are in frequent contact with these individuals and check on their well-being often as well as provide them with food and clothing as necessary," she added.

If additional services are needed, the agency relies on the city's public safety chaplain Ron Anspuagh to connect the less fortunate to other resources, Duncan said.
