Amicalola Falls State Park

Enjoy a hike in the mountains and photograph the tallest waterfall cascade in the southeast.

My husband and I have always enjoyed hiking. This was our favorite pastime when we first began dating, and then as newlyweds, we were on a very, tight budget.

Though we are now older and less agile, we still enjoy a quiet walk in the woods. So about twice a year we put on our Tevas and drive a short 55 miles to Amicalola Falls State Park, near Dawsonville. What a perfect get away!

The park offers us peaceful surroundings, mountain air, great hiking trails and quiet time together. The 729 foot waterfall is the tallest cascade in the southeast and can be accessed by an easy trail or a more strenuous one. Can you guess which route I usually take? A total of 12 miles of trails of all skill levels wind through the park, one of which leads to the southern end of the famous Appalachian Trail.

The park’s mountaintop Lodge and Conference Center is home to the Maple Restaurant and its scenic views. Head there after your hike and enjoy a delightful meal and some quiet time in a rocking chair on the deck.
