Classes Will Help Cherokee Children Get Up and Moving

The Cherokee Recreation and Parks Agency will launch yoga, dance classes to combat childhood obesity.

Just in time for the holidays.

Cherokee County parents will soon be able to sign their children up for two classes that will get them their blood flowing.

The Cherokee Recreation and Parks Agency will launch its Cardio Kool Kids and Ground Kids Yoga classes this month.

Cardio Kool Kids is the "latest craze in kids' dance and fitness," the agency noted in its press release.

The class, for children ages 6 to 12, will combine hip-hop, dance, kickboxing, sports drills and strength training in its routines.

It will also educate children on how to incorporate healthy decisions into their lives by providing group discussions and writing.

Those participating for the first time will receive a t-shirt, car magnet, a journal, pen and one set of hand weights.

Registration for first-time students is $90, while returning students will be charged $75.

The class will meet on Tuesdays between 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Jan. 15 through Feb. 26 at the agency's offices at 7545 Main Street Building 200 in Woodstock.

Ground Kids Yoga, offered for children between the age of 5 and 11, will combine traditional yoga, laughter and elevation in a playful way for children.

Children participating will learn about proper alignment, unifying breathing with movement and "to be mindful of their thoughts, words and actions."

Other benefits include building strength, stability and self-esteem; increase flexibility; reduce stress; improve concentration and become more self aware.

Registration for this class is $80 and the class will meet on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Jan. 12 through Feb. 16 at the recreation center.

Parents can register their children on the agency's website or at its physical location in Woodstock. Call (770) 924-7768 for more information.
