Etowah Indian Mounds Historic Site

History and nature await you less than 30 miles away.

My husband and I enjoy best those weekends when we spontaneously decide to ditch the laundry, errands, meal planning and other adult responsibilities. That’s right; we are occasional rebels who hit the road with our Wayfarers on and our sunroof open–ready for all manner of adventures.

Of course, this spontaneity only occurs about three times a year. Most weekends we can be found vacuuming or lugging clutter to Goodwill. But we recently made a mutual promise to create more “we” time and to seek Great Escapes, even if it means wearing wrinkled clothes to work on Monday. As I said–we’re rebels.

Unfortunately, our budget is a bit tight right now. The last escape involved sports bar hot wings, then a movie (with jumbo popcorn, of course) and cost upwards of $60. Yikes!  So I’m currently scouting low budget escapes.

Guess what I found? The Etowah Indian Mounds Historic Site in Cartersville. This 54-acre area was home to thousands of Native Americans from 1000 to 1550 A.D. The site contains six mounds, a museum and multiple artifacts from the people who inhabited this area over 500 years ago. There is even a winding nature trail leading to the Etowah River.

The Etowah Indian Mounds Historic Site is located five miles southwest of I-75 (Exit No. 288), less than 30 miles from Woodstock. From I-75, just follow the brown directional signs. Admission is $5 and the hours are Wednesday-Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Plan on a 1-2 hour visit. Do bring a picnic or venture to nearby Cartersville for a bite to eat. And be sure to peruse the website for information about Saturday information sessions and presentations. There is much to learn about the history of this area.

What a Great Escape. Perfect for a spring day, affordable, educational and a terrific place to walk hand-in-hand with my hubby.  See you there!
