Farmers Market Brings Locally Grown Food to Downtown Woodstock

Main Street Woodstock's annual Farmers Market will kick off on May 25 and dozens of vendors are ready to go.

Woodstock residents will soon have a chance to shop for fresh produce, homemade products and baked goods virtually in their own backyards.

Main Street Woodstock's Farmers Market, presented by Cherokee Bank, will begin later this month on May 25.

The market will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. each Saturday through Oct. 26 in the parking lot behind the Chambers at City Center/Elm Street Arts facility.

Twenty-five vendors have signed up for the market, and the city receives about three applications each week, said Kyle Bennett, assistant director of tourism and visitor center operations for the Woodstock Visitors Center at Dean's Store.

Main Street will accept new vendors as they do not limit how many vendors participate and they also accept new vendors after the market season starts.

A wide variety of vendors typically participate in the market, such as those plan to sell home-baked goods, bath and beauty products, jams and jellies.

This year, one vendor will specialize in lavender plants and products that use lavender, Bennett added. On the Friday before each week's market, Main Street Woodstock will post on its Facebook page the list of vendors who will set up shop at that week's market.

Woodstock's Farmers Market continues to remain popular. Last year, Main Street Woodstock decided to extend the market through October due to the demand.

Bennett told Patch he thinks the popularity is part of a larger trend over the last few years as locally grown produce, organic produce and (an) emphasis on eating healthy (have) become much more popular throughout the entire country."

Bennett said he hopes the crowds will continue to flock to downtown Woodstock for the market.

"Most of our vendors tended to sell out or nearly sell out last year," he added. "The vendors were very happy with the market attendance we had in 2012 and we hope to see if continue that success in 2013."
