Woodstock Resident Will Teach Gold Panning in June

Rob Kelly, founder of the Allatoona Gold Panners, will give a presentation on the hobby at the Rock Barn in Canton next month.

A Woodstock recreational gold panner will head to Canton to share his passion with other like-minded residents.

The Cherokee County Historical Society will host Rob Kelly, founder of the Allatoona Gold Panners, to give a demonstration gold panning to county residents.

The program, which is free and open to the public, will be held on Tuesday June 18 meeting at 7 p.m. at the Rock Barn in Canton.

Kelly will describe the history of the Gold Rush in Georgia, the 41 gold mines in Cherokee County, the properties of gold and how to locate a gold creek that could be in your backyard.

He'll also teach residents how to watch a gold creek to locate potential pay streaks and will walk through the steps of panning quartz gravel for flakes of the state’s 23-karat, placer gold.

He and fellow panners will then demonstrate the process of panning for gold.
