Local Musician Hits the Road

Brendan Guest left for Canada, but his music will leave a lasting impression on his audiences.

Brendan Guest looks at the world a little differently. This young musician from Canada admonishes those in his age group for being apathetic to or ignorant of what really matters in life. Guest spends much of his time thinking deeply about topics most young people never even consider. This mature and concerned mindset gives his music a profound, intense feel.

Guest has been affected by music his entire life. Growing up, his father was obsessed with The Beatles.

“He thought if it wasn't The Beatles, it wasn't music,” Guest said.

Like many musicians, Guest has played music from an early age. After dropping the clarinet for lack of a personal connection, he picked up the guitar. He studied tabs on his own for a while, but found that they too were lacking in the personal element he was looking for. Not wanting to leave the guitar, Guest began to experiment and found his musical voice.

“My lyrics are me,” he said.

Every one of his songs is a reflection of his experiences and emotions, and the audience responds accordingly. The usually loud crowd at Copper Coin's grows silent when Guest plays.

Guest says that his music is a little offbeat and unconventional. His inventiveness both with rhythms and vocals gives his music a unique attitude and Guest does not consider himself a part of any specific genre.

Guest played his last show for a while at Copper Coin on Aug. 31. He plans to return to Vancouver and continue his musical endeavors.

Fan Michael Gullicksen attended the last performance and was impressed once again by Guest's unparalleled ability to snap everyone within earshot to attention.

“The audience seemed to be so infatuated with his talent," Gullicksen said. "I've never seen someone his age have that effect on a group of people."

Guest was an employee at and a frequent performer around Woodstock, especially at and Copper Coin. He will be missed until his return.
