Bites Nearby: Los Gavilanes Mexican Restaurant

This Holly Springs restaurant does not have the authentic Mexican food you can find elsewhere.

There are several Mexican restaurants in the area that I frequent on a weekly basis. I decided to try  in Holly Springs. It was an OK experience, but I think I may stick with my usual spots.

Overview: The restaurant has a nice atmosphere with booths and tables for seating and a full bar. It also has weekly food and drink specials. The location is in a shopping plaza strip mall. It's a bit of a drive if you live in Woodstock or Canton. The restaurant was full for a Wednesday night.

Décor: The interior, which is decorated nicely with Mexican art and a bar, has the feeling of a Mexican cantina. There's a small patio outside for nice weather.

Entrees: I ordered several appetizers—cheese dip, guacamole, and Los Gavilanes special cheese dip with seafood, beef and chicken.

The cheese dip, which came in a tortilla shell, was good. The guacamole, carnitas dinner and vegeterian meal were good, too. I loved the salsa and chips that are served with the meal.

The Los Gavilanes dip seemed to have been made ahead and heated in the microwave. The meat in the dip was tough and hard to identify.

For my main course, I ordered the fish tacos. I always order fish tacos when I try a new Mexican restaurant. I was sadly disappointed. The fish was simmered in a sauce and had a very fishy taste to it.

The kids chicken fingers weren't a hit, either. Some of the meal was tasty while other parts weren't. Los Gavilanes Mexican Restaurant does not have the authentic Mexican food you can find elsewhere. Entrees range from $6.50 to $12.

Service: Sad to say, but I was not impressed with the service. The restaurant was full and there were only two people working that day. Several tables got up and left because of the wait. I’m hoping this was just a one time thing, but it was not very pleasant. At one point, my waitress was a bit rude. In her defense, I think she was a bit overwhelmed. Both waitresses had to be cashiers and bartenders. I really felt bad for them.

Hours: Los Gavilanes Mexican Restaurant is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Located at 6109 Hickory Flat Hwy., it is approximately 10 miles from Woodstock.
