Review: Kaysons Bar and Grille

On the menu: Cowboy Burger, green beans and Molten Core Cake

You want a TV with that burger?

This neighborhood restaurant and grille has more TVs (a grand total of 38) than burgers. With wide screens all around the walls as well as at each booth, you won’t get bored.  It is totally decked out for major sports programming. Aside from the abundance of visual entertainment, the menu is more than generous with tasty fare.

The ever-popular Buffalo wings and an array of dipping sauces are great openers or perfect bar food. The other munchies include time-honored selections like fried mozzarella, potato skins, nachos, cheese fries and more.

From the grill come several tempting selections. For example, a popular one is the Backyard Rib Platter-slow-cooked hickory smoked pork ribs ($14.99) and the “10 Dollar Steak” which is really a $15 steak. Kind of like a bonus for just stopping by. There are chicken ($9.99/$17.99-double order), and shrimp ($9.99/$21.99 double order), steak ($11.99/21.99 double order) fajitas with the usual onions, bell peppers and tortillas. There are seven salad selections with favorites like the Cobb Salad that comes with the addition of blackened chicken breast ($8.99) and the Classic Chef Salad ($8.99) that is guaranteed to satisfy.

Soup is made daily and included on the menu is Lobster Bisque, a rare and welcomed offering. There is something for everyone on Kaysons menu.

From the pasta section, you can select the Chicken Alfredo ($12.99) or the Louisiana Penne, topped with a creamed sauce, spiced chicken, tomatoes and scallions ($12.99), and more. For seafood lovers, a wild caught salmon, grilled with a secret marinade is on the menu for $12.99, a “Grouper-in-Law” Filet, another major secret from the kitchen of Kaysons is yours for $12.99, either grilled or blackened. There is so much on the menu that you have to stay in the neighborhood just to try everything!

With so many delicious-sounding selections, I asked my server for a recommendation. She reported that the Cowboy Burger ($8.29) is the most popular. It is a chargrilled burger with barbeque sauce, hickory-smoked bacon, cheddar-jack cheese and batter fried onion rings—a classic taste that required four napkins. The veggies-the lettuce, tomato, red onion and pickles that accompanied the hearty portion of beef were fresh, crisp and very tasty. I now know why it is the most popular. But with so many menu items to try, I don’t know when I’ll be back around to the Cowboy Burger, but I will.

This might sound strange, but along with the steak fries, my server, Taya thought that I would be interested in the special way the chef prepares green beans—yeah, green beans. Well, I’m game, so I ordered a side of green beans. Well, I admit it. They were special. The green beans were grilled, perfectly seasoned then tossed in a mélange of slivered almonds, tomatoes and bits of bacon. I’m going to try this at home in the summer when the beans are fresh, though. Quite a surprising side dish, I’ll admit.

For dessert, I selected the Molten Core Cake ($5.99), which is a sweet, moist basic chocolate cake with fudge filling, topped with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and chocolate syrup-- an indulgence well worth the price and the extra crunches the next day.

Kaysons is your neighborhood grille. No surprises, plenty of entertainment, family friendly atmosphere, good food and palatable prices for all budgets. Plan on a visit for St. Patrick’s Day, March 17. The festivities will go on throughout the day and into the evening. There will be specials galore and hopefully, weather permitting, outdoor seating.

Kaysons is a keeper in my book.
