Review: Towne Lake Diner

On the menu: Dolmades platter (grape leaves, ground beef, rice, lemon sauce) and Greek coffee

Diners are about comfort food, really, and diners usually have a large variety of meal offerings. So, you won’t be disappointed with on Eagle Drive, a “newbie” at this location for about eight months.

It has something for everyone. Their menu is massive with the flexibility to serve breakfast, lunch or dinner anytime. This is an amazing approach to service because, really, they recognize that sometimes in the middle of the day someone may just crave a Belgian waffle with a side of bacon or strawberries and whipped cream. It happens. And there are the times when, as night falls, one may want an omelet. And for those people who get a hankering for liver and onions with a side of mashed potatoes, well, you can get that at Towne Lake Diner too.

There are burgers, sandwiches, Paninis, triple deckers, wraps, snacks and appetizers, subs and gyros on this amazing menu. You will find crispy salad platters big enough to feed an army and dinner specialties from the Prince of Comfort Food—the meatloaf platter to specialty pastas.

I focused on the Greek specialties and ordered the Dolmades ($9.95) platter of stuffed grape leaves with ground beef and rice, topped with a delightful lemon sauce. If you’ve never ventured to the cuisine of the Greek Isles, you must try this one. It’s special.

Always ask about the specials, but the menu normally offers so much it may be hard to consider ever more choices.

The servers are warm, friendly and genuinely make you feel at home. It’s not hard because together with the good service, the decor and background music from the “old school” performers of the past, like the Shirelles, Roy Orbison, Larry Williams, Martha and the Vandellas singing “the Heatwave,” and other toe-tapping tunes from the heyday of the American tradition, the diner, you will enjoy the experience.

The desserts are tempting eye candy. But, I’ll stop by on another occasion to taste and report back. In lieu of a mile-high slice of cake, I had the pleasure of finishing my dinner with a cup of Greek coffee prepared by Mr. Kalatzis (owner) himself. He’s a “hands-on, create an enjoyable experience” kind of chef that our brief, but pleasant conversation completely underscored.

Remember, at Towne Lake Diner, “It’s Your Thing...Do What ‘Cha Wanna Do.” There’s something there for everyone.
