The Real Story

HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!  The fourth of July is a day that we celebrate the independence of our country, the United States of America.  Enjoy your day – stay cool and be safe!

In recent days, my opponent questioned my voting record.  First, the statement I changed my vote -- is true.  The house rules allow legislators to change one’s vote after the electronic board is locked as long as it is done that same day.  My votes are based on a philosophic principle. Hundreds of bills are introduced each session, thousands of pages printed each time a bill is changed, amended or revised.  What I originally read and decided to vote for, may have changed in content before it returns to the House floor.  This is especially true the last night of session called Sine Die when bills are coming at you fast and furious.

I personally believe when one changes a vote, it is being conscientious -- thinking through the issue before and after the vote.  Some elected officials are hoodwinked by special interests, but I carefully contemplate each and every vote.  What my opponent may think is uncertainty is in fact a follow-up and a review of the bills. 

My vote may change; my convictions remain the same.  On the issue of Sunday sales, I voted my conscience and my convictions of ‘no’, instead of giving individuals the ability to decide for themselves.  After consideration, I decided to place the decision in the hands of the people, and changed my vote that same day to ‘yes.’ When voting, I constantly ask myself am I voting my conscience, my convictions, what is best for my district or the betterment of all Georgians.  The lines do cross and certainly get blurred on many occasions because most bills are not simply black and white.

I am elected to get it right; I take every vote seriously, and I take the time to make sure it is right.  Most do not take advantage of changing a vote once the board is locked.  The people of Cherokee elected me to represent their interests and that is something I take to heart.  I do due diligence and will continue to do so. 

In closing, I am a true Conservative voice for you at the Capitol.   The legislative watchdog website: www.electtherightcandidate.com gave me a perfect 100% conservative rating, making me one of only two legislators in the House with that rating.  This election is too important for the petty politics of personal attacks that distort the truth just so one can get elected.
