Multiverse? A note on the difference between observation and speculation…

Sometimes you hear something that makes you think of the Athenians during the time of the Apostle Paul. "[They] spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing." Acts 17:21

In my previous posts on Why there is Something and not Nothing (here and here), a topic was mentioned that I would like to address before I take on my next subject (on the origin of life for those who are curious).

In the comments, mostly from those who disagree that a universe which has a finite beginning must by definition be a created universe, the possibility of our universe being just one of a “multiverse” was raised. The idea of a multiverse generally goes this way: There are an infinite number of universes, being randomly born and dying all the time. Since they are random, it is not surprising that ours was born with the physical parameters arranged in such a way that life and consciousness would arise, and we would be able to learn about our universe. After all, in an infinity of universes lie an infinity of possibilities.

Now for the obvious: if a multiverse exists it is necessarily outside of our universe and thus unobservable. So, the question here being begged is, why have scientists proposed something that can in no way be tested or proven?

The simple answer is that they are made VERY uncomfortable by what the legitimate application of science is telling them. The universe did indeed have a finite beginning. It is indeed exquisitely finely tuned to support intelligent life. These facts point to God, and secular scientists have to go to great lengths to try and make the arrow point another way. However, at best they have only delayed the inevitable conclusion by muddying the waters with the absurd idea of a multiverse.

Paul Davies, professor of natural philosophy at the Australian Center for Astrobiology, pretty much summed it up when he said: “Far from doing away with a transcendent Creator, the multiverse theory actually injects that very concept at almost every level of its logical structure. Gods and worlds, creators and creatures, lie embedded in each other, forming an infinite regress in unbounded space.” (Here.)

Indeed Mr. Davies. If, after all, anything is possible, then an all-powerful God is possible. If an all-powerful God exists in any universe, then by His very nature He exists in them all. That includes this one.
