Army Spc. Gary Lee Nelson III is Woodstock's Lone Iraq War Casualty

The U.S.-led invasion of Iraq began 10 years ago this week on March 19 and although the war is officially over, fighting remains steadfast in the country.

One Woodstock soldier is among the thousands of casualties of the Iraq war. 

The U.S-led invasion of Iraq began 10 years ago on March 19, 2013. By one count, the war is directly responsible for 189,000 deaths, not including those who died from hardship caused by the fighting.

In all, 4,802 Americans and allies have died in the war, according to the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count, including 141 Georgians.

Among them was Spc. Gary Lee Nelson III, who is listed on the CNN war casualties website. Army Spc. Gary Lee Nelson III, 20, died of injuries in a non-combat incident on April 5, 2011.

Nelson was buried at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton after a funeral service held at St. Michael The Archangel Roman Catholic Church in Woodstock.

He was participating in Operation New Dawn, the name of the U.S. military mission in Iraq since Sept. 1, when Operation Iraqi Freedom officially ended.

Nelson, who attended Woodstock High School, served with the 6th Squadron, 8th Cavalry, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, based at Fort Stewart in southeast Georgia.
