Dean Sheridan's Withdrawal Notice Received by State

Sheridan's name will still appear on the ballot for the Georgia Senate District 14 special election, a local elections official said.

While the Georgia Secretary of State's office has officially received Dean Sheridan's notice of withdrawal from the Senate District 14 special election, his name will remain on the ballot.

Cody Whitlock, a spokesperson with the office, said the department received Sheridan's notice late Friday, which narrows the pool of candidates down to: Republicans Nicole Ebbeskotte of Woodstock, Matt Laughridge of Cartersville, Dwight Pullen of Canton, Bruce Thompson of White and Democrat Christopher G. Nesmith of Adairsville.

However, that doesn't mean Sheridan's name will come off the ballot. Cherokee County Elections Supervisor Janet Munda said there is no way they could take Sheridan's name off the ballot now, as the ballots have already been printed, mailed out or uploaded into voting machines.

However, the office has put up notices at the Al Stone Elections Office for early voters and in mail-out ballot packets to notify residents that if they do cast a vote for Sheridan, their tally will not count towards Sheridan, Munda said.

Sheridan on Oct. 12 announced his intentions to withdraw from the race during a Cherokee County Republican Party forum.

Last week, Sheridan said he will not make any endorsements in the race, but he will soon reveal the name of one candidate who he accuses of voting "Democratic for some 20 years all but once."

Sheridan, along with Republican candidate Matt Laughridge, had their candidacies challenged by Canton resident Garrett Jamieson.

An administrative judge ruled both were qualified to seek the seat, which was vacated by Barry Loudermilk in his bid to run for the Republican nomination for the U.S. House of Representatives District 11 seat.

Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp last week upheld the administrative judge's ruling on both cases.
