Something for the Kids To Do

School is out-great summer activities for your family.

Now that school is out (Wow! The year went by quickly... congratulations seniors!) and there are many things happening in our community. Sure it's great to have some days off to just sleep in a little, play in the yard with friends and ride bikes, helmets on of course, but a few structured activities scattered among those lazy, hazy, crazy days will be good for the kids-and parents, too!

I spent my summers as a young teen with YouTheatre in Rochester, NY. We would take over the usually 'dark' in June and July local community theater and produce a handful of plays and musicals. We'd rehearse all day and night for two to three weeks and then put on some amazing productions directed by college theater majors.

I also remember going to a family camp up in the Adirondack Mountains where we made plaster casts of deer and raccoon footprints in the woods and the obligatory boondoggles.   In our backyard we had a large garden filled with all kinds of vegetables and fruit trees and a playhouse my dad built for us. I much preferred playing make believe in the little house over the endless weeding.

All around us are art camps, drama camps, sports camps, horseriding camps and with the Internet, it's so easy to search using keywords for Cherokee and what your child might like to try this summer. What a great time to explore a potential talent or learn a new skill!

So here comes a short list of day camp options operated by non-profits that are close by - just click on the link:
