Woodstock To Pay Homage to Veterans

The city, along with the American Legion and the Marine Corps League, to hold its annual Veterans Day ceremony

The city of Woodstock will once again join forces with Marine Corps League Detachment #1311, Warriors’ Watch Riders and American Legion Post 316 to put on its annual Veterans Day ceremony.

The candlelight ceremony will start at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11 at the Park at City Center.

Woodstock this year will add U.S. Army Sgt. Joshua J. Strickland's name to its Fallen Heroes Memorial. Strickland, who was from Woodstock, who was killed in September while in serving in Afghanistan.

It will also unveil the new Braille American Flag plaque, which was donated to Woodstock by the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Loriann White, Hightower Trail Chapter regent of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, said with roughly 165,000 blind veterans in the United States and an additional 7,000 becoming blind due to illnesses, this country has a "responsibility to take care of those who've taken care of us."

White said having a Braille American flag plaque displayed is vital, and added the U.S. Department of Defense reports about 13 percent of those wounded in Iraq have suffered from a "serious" eye injury.

"This is why having a Braille American Flag monument prominently displayed, accessible to veterans, for veterans and others alike are vital to them, to us and for our future," she added.
