Adventures in Woodstock High band: Give a kid a chance

It's crunch time for the Woodstock High marching band scholarship and sponsorship drive, Will you help give every kid a chance?

Most of us (especially those of us who are over 40) remember school- sponsored activities to be just that - provided and paid for by the school. Anyone could be a part of band or art or sports; it was only those who were good enough for leagues or private lessons who incurred a cost.

Unfortunately, those days are gone. It would be wonderful to have an unlimited school budget offering an extensive revenue base so we could purchase all our needed equipment, supplies, clinicians, music, etc., but we know it is impossible considering the economic changes we are experiencing in every area of education. Our saving grace has been our community and its support of the Woodstock High School band program. We are indebted to the community and band parents for keeping us debt free while giving every student who wants to be a part of the marching band program a chance.

Last Friday was the deadline for scholarship applications for the 2013-14 marching season.  We again have a large number of applications (more than last year).  At this point, we do NOT have the funds to award scholarships for even half of the number.  Even with our budget constraints, WWBB is offering three full and two partial scholarships. Do you know any companies that might wish to make a tax deductible donation?  PLEASE take a minute and consider sponsoring the band to make this happen for these students that otherwise won't get to march. It is heartbreaking to hear the things our students are dealing with and sometimes marching band is the one good thing they get to experience.  Whether it's a full scholarship, half scholarship or even $100 or $20, it all adds up and allows the scholarship committee to award scholarships to as many students as possible. How about making a difference in the life of a band student today? Please pledge a donation to the Scholarship Fund.  Simply visit http://www.signupgenius.com/go/805054FAFA62F4-2013 and give to the general fund or sponosor a student directly.

Your donation is tax deductible and will help students march who otherwise simply can't afford to. We appreciate the help so very much. Let's give every kid a chance!
