Adventures in Woodstock High band: Our Greatest Adventure

The band had many amazing adventures this school year but what mattered most is actually unknown to most of our students and their families

As we reflect over the 2012-13 band season, it's hard to choose the biggest highlight of the year. With nearly 1/3 of the matching band being rookies, there was a great deal of learning and bonding in the summer camps and practices. Add to that the honor of being part of the WHS football team as they opened the 12-13 season with the first game (and the nervousness of being on TV for our very first show!) and you start to see how our year started off with a bang. However, it wasn't the show, the bus trips to away games. the competitions, or even performing at Disney that sticks out as our greatest adventure. In fact, what mattered most is actually unknown to most of our students and their families.

In March, the band hosted its annual fundraiser The Taste and Sound of Woodstock. This annual event brings together the best of the local restuarants and businesses for a day of tasting and supporting Woodstock and highlighting the amazing talent our community has to offer. We were overwhelmed at the response; 15 resturants provided food for over 200 people with amazing singers and performers keeping us entertained throughout the day. The community support was equally amazing as was the turnout of student volunteers who gave up their Saturday to set-up, man booths, clean, and help tear down.

At the end of the event, we were astouded by the amount of food that remained due to the generousity of those businesses who partipated. It was decided to donate what was left to MUST ministries.  One of the dads volunteered to go. In her own words, his wife Marie explains what happened next:

"Bill delivered the food to Must Ministries' kitchen in Marietta. (The Cherokee location can't serve food)

After making introductions and explaining himself the man looked at him with an amazed face and tears in his eyes.

Bill asked him if he was OK. He told Bill that he had no idea how much his visit meant to him. He is the kitchen manager and told Bill that they did not have a food provider for dinner tonight.
He had been sitting in his car wondering how he was going to feed 50-60 people tonight when Bill pulled in with his truck. He was so overwhelmed."

This is truly what stands out to me as this band's greatest adventure. A local community that was beyond generous, a group of hard working band students that kept the event running and a set of parents who recognized a need beyond just what was in front of them. Even though so many involved have no idea what they truly accomplished that day, we are so proud to be a part of the Woodstock Marching Wolverines and the Woodstock community.
