A 20-year-old soldier from Woodstock died Tuesday while serving in Mosul, Iraq, the Department of Defense announced Wednesday.
Army Spc. Gary L. Nelson III died of injuries from an unspecified incident that was not combat-related, the Pentagon announcement said. He was participating in Operation New Dawn, the name of the U.S. military mission in Iraq since Sept. 1, when Operation Iraqi Freedom officially ended.
Nelson served with the 6th Squadron, 8th Cavalry, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, based at Fort Stewart in southeast Georgia.
