Cherokee Deputies, Firefighters Given Public Safety Awards

The Canton Moose Lodge on Monday held its annual Public Safety Awards banquet.

The men who serve and protect Cherokee County residents from crime and fires were recognized earlier this week in a ceremony in Canton.

The Canton Moose Lodge held its annual Public Safety Awards banquet, which commends the best of the best in law enforcement, fire fighting and emergency medical treatment. 

Canton Police Officer Stephen Delman was presented with the agency's Officer of the Year award, which was bestowed upon him by Canton Police Chief Bob Merchant. 

Within Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services went to:

  • Paramedics of the Year: Mike Malone and John Bennett
  • Firefighter of the Year: Joel B. Sciranko
  • Volunteer Firefighter of the Year: Bob Pratt
  • Special Operations Member of the Year: Gerald Richmond
  • Support Services: Bryan Payne
  • Fire Explorer of the Year: Brook Ice
For the Cherokee Sheriff's Office, Officer of the Year Awards were given to:
  • Deputy Daniel Hayes: Criminal Investigations
  • Sgt. Wayne Turner: Adult Detention Center
  • Deputy Rodney Burley: Court Services Division
  • Deputy Preston Peavy: Warrant and Civil Unit
  • Deputy Sean O'Brien: Oak Grove Precicnt
  • Deputy Jason Yarbrough: Waleska Preicnt
  • Sgt. David Baron: Hickory Flat Precicnt
  • Deputy Ben Botzong: Bridge Mill Precicnt
  • Deputy Robert Arrieta: Free Home Precint
  • Deputy Frank Jones: Traffic Enforcement Unit
  • Sgt. Matthew Azaroff: K-9 Unit
  • Corporal Mike Wells, Sydney Nix and Melanie Thrasher: Evidence Unit
