Family Who Lost Son In January Displaced By Fire

A fire destroyed most of a home in unincorporated Acworth inhabited by a family who also suffered the lost of a family member in January.

An Acworth family who lost a family member earlier this year is now battling another tragedy.

Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services and Woodstock Fire and Rescue responded to the call at 6356 Caladium Drive in unincorporated Acworth, located off Woodstock Road just south of Kellogg Creek Road.

When firefighters arrived onto the scene, they discovered 75 percent of the home engulfed in flames, Cherokee fire said in a press release.

Tony Curtis, one of the residents of the home, told authorities he'd just finished cutting grass and went inside the house to take a shower. Once he stepped out of the shower, Curtis said he observed smoke coming through one of the vents. Curtis went outside and discovered the home on fire, the agency said.

"Neighbors had already called 911 to report the fire when Curtis came out of the structure," spokesman Tim Cavender added.

The majority of the house has been destroyed and inhabitable. A neighbor’s home was also damaged, as the heat from the fire melted some of the vinyl siding.

Curtis lived in the home with his wife, Connie, and stepson, Kevin. This was the second tragedy for the family this year. The family indicated that they also lost a son in January. Cavender added.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
