Police Warn About Thefts at Gyms

Follow these suggested tips to help prevent any thefts while working out.

The warns residents about a growing trend of thefts at local gyms.

According to a news release from the police department, Woodstock has seen a recent rise in the number of thefts occurring at the gyms in the city where items are stolen from within the lockers and vehicles.

In March of last year, by a man and a woman who took a gym bag in an open locker with the car keys. They also used the credit cards left in the vehicle at various stores.

The police department offers the following tips to help residents protect their valuables while working up a sweat:

  • Leave your personal items at home, if at all possible. 
  • If you must bring items with you, store the items in the truck of your vehicle out of sight. Items left in the floorboard or in a seat can be at risk for thieves who scout gym parking lots. 
  • Limit the amount of items you bring into the gym. Only bring what you actually need within such as your membership card, car keys and your phone. You can keep these with you limiting the chance of theft. 
  • Always use a lock on your gym locker if you must store items within the gym 
  • Do not leave your items unattended within the gym.
  • Be aware of your surroundings in the parking lot and in the gym looking for suspicious activity. 
  • Alert gym staff of suspicious people within the gym or locker room. 
  • Call 9-1-1 to report any suspicious activity you observe. 

The Woodstock Police Department asks residents to report any thefts which occur so officers can be aware of the problems occurring and assist in preventing future problems.
