Sheriff's Office: Man Jumps Median, Drives Wrong Way on Highway 92

A Cartersville man is in jail after deputies say he jumped a concrete median and drove the wrong way on Highway 92 just west of Woodstock.

Deputies with the Cherokee Sheriff's Office arrested William Scott Bently, 55, and charged him with driving under the influence, reckless driving, driving on the wrong side of the road and hit and run after an incident that occurred just after midnight on Thursday. 

Deputies George Rose and Frank Jones were driving westbound on Highway 92 near Bells Ferry Road when they observed a vehicle "cross over the concrete median" on the state highway and proceeded to travel eastbound in the westbound lanes, the sheriff's office said in a press release. 

Bently allegedly came close to hitting the deputies' vehicle as he headed eastbound. The deputies crossed over into the eastbound lanes to stop Bently's vehicle before it could hit any westbound travelers. 

However, it was the maneuver of a Gwinnett County wrecker driver, Billy Smith, that proved to be successful. 

Smith was driving eastbound on Highway 92 near Wabash Trail and saw the incident unfold. Smith was able to put his wrecker in front of Bently's vehicle, which prevented him from traveling any further. 

Bently remains at the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center with a $4,371 bond.
