The man who was shot and killed by a Woodstock police officer last week in a Walmart parking lot had active warrants out for his arrest.

That's according to information provided by the Cherokee Sheriff's Office. Dennis Doty, 45, was wanted by the Woodstock Police Department on terroristic threats, obstruction and disorderly conduct charges, according to spokesperson Lt. Jay Baker.

In 2004, he'd been booked into the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center on criminal trespassing charges, Baker added.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation continues to investigate the officer-involved shooting, spokesperson Sherry Lang said. Once the investigation is complete, the state agency will hand the case over to the Blue Ridge Judicial Circuit district attorney's office.

District Attorney Shannon Wallace said she has not received the case file. Once she receives it, Wallace said she will review the evidence gathered and conduct a follow-up investigation "if needed."

Wallace said it may be "several weeks before I receive anything from them," adding the agency usually doesn't hand over a case file until they are finished with their entire investigation.

At around 9:15 p.m. Friday, April 11, officers with the Woodstock Police Department responded to a suspicious person call in the parking lot of the big box retailer at 12182 Highway 92. Shortly after the officers' arrival, the shooting occurred. Doty was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital where he died from his injuries.

No further details have been released on the circumstances of the shooting or the officer's identity.

The officer involved in the shooting was not injured and remains on administrative leave per department policy.

I didn't know Mr. Doty but I always hate to hear someone has been shot and killed by an officer. I hope that the shooting was justified and that the state and District Attorney do their jobs in investigating what happened. Could the Sheriff's department be trying to justify the shooting by reporting that Mr. Doty had been booked on criminal tresspassing (but not convicted 10 years ago) and had outstanding warrants for "terroristic threats, obstruction and disorderly conducts". Patch could have and should have reported more information as to the background of these warrants and history.

Why is it that the Patch has reported nothing of the attempt to hijack the detention van?

I really hope there is more to this story, if not it's just another example of inexperienced cops in Cherokee county abusing their power

Hey, all. I'm only reporting what both Woodstock Police and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is telling me. They have not given any details surrounding what led to the shooting, etc. And Drew, what are you referring to?
Edward Doty April 19, 2014 at 03:13 PM
My name is Edward Doty,Dennis Doty was my brother! There is still a lot of questions surrounding this shooting. But as far as the warrants, they was pulled after a prior indecent that happened at the MacDonald's off hwy 92 in woodstock, where the police had to fight and tased shawn a number of times .thats when he was given the chance to go to the hospital or to jail!then he was released . why they didnt keep him in custody isnt clear.
