SW Cherokee Sees Rise in Car Thefts

An increase in car thefts and thefts from vehicle is plaguing the southwest portion of Cherokee County.

That's according to a press release from the Cherokee Sheriff's Office. The agency said in the last three weeks, four vehicles have been stolen and 12 additional cars have been entered and subsequently had items stolen from inside the vehicles.

The agency was able to recover all four vehicles as well as most of the items stolen from the vehicles with the help of Cobb County Police and the Marietta Police Department. 

Additionally, two arrests have been made in conjunction with these thefts with more arrests are expected, said spokesperson Lt. Jay Baker. 

Baker stated the case remains active and the names of the suspects are not being released at this time. 

"Every vehicle that was stolen and every car that was entered was unlocked," Baker added. "Additionally, keys were left in every car that was stolen."

The sheriff's office is strongly encouraging residents to always lock their doors and to never leave their keys in their vehicles. 

"Except on very rare occasions in which suspects force their way into vehicles, locking your car door will greatly reduce your chance of becoming a victim of this type of crime," Baker stated.
