Cherokee 'Fared Well' During Storms

There are no reported injuries, deaths or structural damage from Wednesday's storms in Cherokee County.

Lt. Jay Baker from the  said Cherokee County only received reports of downed trees while Waleska and Salacoa received most of the damage.

"With all things considered, Cherokee County fared well during Wednesday’s storms," Baker said. "We monitored the weather and the public safety response from the EOC (Emergency Operations Center) at Headquarters. There were reports of downed trees in Cherokee but almost no structural damage has been reported. Most importantly there have been no reports of injuries or death in Cherokee County. The Waleska and Salacoa area received the brunt of the damage in Cherokee but as previously mentioned, it was mainly downed trees."

The tornado warning has been lifted, but the watch is still active till 2 a.m.

The north part of the county has been upgraded to a tornado warning again till 12:15 a.m. Ball Ground is among the most effected areas.

The tornado warning has been degraded to a watch till 2 a.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning for Cherokee County till 11:30 p.m. This has been extended twice from the original warning.

Updated: 10:43 a.m.

The National Weather Service lifted the tornado watch that was in effect till noon. There are still thunderstorms on the radar for this afternoon and evening that could bring hail and damaging winds. Gusts of wind could get to speeds of 20 mph.

Updated: 9:40 a.m.

The severe thunderstorm warning has been lifted. The original storms that prompted the warning have significantly weakened.

Updated: 9:14 a.m.

Cherokee County is under a severe thunderstorm warning till 9:30 a.m. and a tornado watch till noon.

  Lt. Jay Baker said the main concern is the 80 mph that are expected with the incoming storm.

The warning sirens went off at 9:04 a.m. for the severe thunderstorm warning.
