UPDATE: Two Bears Hit, Killed on I-575 in Woodstock

A mother and her young bear were struck early Wednesday morning on I-575 at Ridgewalk Parkway.

UPDATE @ 3:30 p.m.: The Woodstock Police Department said both bears were each struck by one car and neither of the drivers were injured.

"It appears as though the mother bear was struck prior to the younger bear being struck," said Woodstock Police spokeswoman Brittany Duncan. "The driver (who hit) the younger bear called to report it and that’s when the mother bear was discovered."

ORIGINAL STORY

Two bears were hit and killed early Wednesday morning on Interstate 575 in Woodstock.

At around 4 a.m., the Woodstock Police Department responded to a single-vehicle accident on the interstate at Ridgewalk Parkway.

Once first responders arrived, they found a juvenile — slightly older than a cub — bear dead on the interstate, said Spokeswoman Brittany Duncan. Duncan said police searched the area and found an adult female bear dead on the shoulder.

A search of the area revealed no other bears or evidence of the animals in the vicinity.

Duncan said crews with the Georgia Department of Transportation responded and removed the animals from the roadway.

GDOT spokesman Mohamed Arafa said the agency dispatched District 6 Assistant Foreman Andrew Bates to the scene, and he removed both carcasses from the interstate.

"There was minimal traffic interruption since the incident occurred before the start of the morning rush hour on this heavily traveled interstate," he added.
