Several local agencies are combing the Etowah River for a suspect wanted on various drug charges who was able to evade capture by floating on a log.

On Monday, two agents with the Cherokee Multi-Agency Narcotics Squad attempted to make contact with Terry Spriggs, 42.

The agents approached Spriggs at a relative's home near Westview Street and Marietta Highway in the city of Canton and the suspect fled on foot.

The man crossed Marietta Highway and entered the Etowah River, Canton Police Department spokesman Pacer Cordry said in a news release.

Canton officers assisted in attempting to apprehend Spriggs, but the man "attached himself to a log," refused to swim ashore and began floating down the river, Cordry added.

Cordry said the agents and officers were able to follow Spriggs on foot down stream for about a quarter of a mile before they lost sight of him "due to the thick brush and trees along the shore line."

Spriggs is wanted on possession of cocaine, two counts of possession of methamphetamine and two counts of probation violation charges, Cordry added.

Along with Canton police and CMANS, the Georgia State Patrol, the Canton Fire Department, Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services and the Cherokee Sheriff's Office are all assisting in the search for Spriggs along the river near Marietta Highway in Canton.

Anyone with information is asked to call 911.

Is this Terry Springs, or Terry Spriggs? This article refers to the suspect by both names.
