Woodstock Solider Dies in Afghanistan

SPC Joshua J. Strickland, 23, was killed when enemy forces attacked him and his unit while training in the Paktia Province.

A soldier from Woodstock was reportedly killed over the weekend in Afghanistan. 

The Department of Defense said SPC Joshua J. Strickland, 23, died on Saturday Sept. 21 while at Forward Operating Base Shank.

Strickland and two other soldiers died from wounds they sustained "when enemy forces attacked their unit with small arms fire while conducting range training" in Gardez, Paktia Province, DoD said in their news release. 

Strickland was assigned to 1st Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group in Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. 

Two other soldiers who were killed in the attack were: Staff Sgt. Liam J. Nevins, 32 of Denver, Colo., who was assigned to 5th Battalion, 19th Special Forces Group, Watkins, Colo.,; and Staff Sgt. Timothy R. McGill, 30, of Ramsey, N.J., who was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 19th Special Forces Group, Middletown, R.I.
