Barry Loudermilk Resigns from Georgia Senate

Loudermilk said he plans to focus all his energy on his campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives.

State Sen. Barry Loudermilk (R-Cassville) has announced his resignation from the Georgia Senate.

Loudermilk on Tuesday said in a press release that he plans to "fully focus" on his bid to run for the U.S. House of Representatives for the District 11 seat in Georgia.

"Over the past several years I have worked tirelessly in both the State House and Senate to promote strong constitutional conservative values in our state government," he said. "Now, more than ever, it is imperative that we take these same values to Washington, D.C."

Loudermilk is running for the U.S. House seat to obtain the Republican Party's nomination to replace Rep. Phil Gingrey, who is running for the U.S. Senate seat Saxby Chambliss will retire from in 2014.

Loudermilk added he was "grateful" to the voters and constituents who chose him as their representative in the Georgia General Assembly.

Loudermilk was first elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 2004 and subsequently re-elected in 2006 and 2008. He was elected to the Georgia Senate in 2010 and was re-elected to the seat last year.

Last year, Loudermilk's district was redrawn to include western Cherokee County.
