Cherokee Considers Reduced FY 2014 Budget

The proposed fiscal year 2014 budget is set at $167.3 million, a 10 percent reduction from the current budget.

The Cherokee County government is expecting to operate a much leaner budget in its upcoming fiscal year.

The county Board of Commissioners today will review its proposed budget for fiscal year 2014, which is proposed at $167.3 million. That's a 10 percent drop from the current budget of $187.3 million.

The budget reduction is driven by the county cutting capital project spending and a lower debt service.

The budget will be presented during the board's work session, which starts at 3 p.m. today at the county's administrative offices. The work session will be followed by the regular meeting, which starts at 6 p.m.

The proposed balanced budget is based upon a tax rate of 9.947. The average home in Cherokee County is worth around $163,500, and that homeowner should expect to pay around $621 in county property taxes.
