Cherokee Commissioners Roll Back Tax Rate

The rates will be formally adopted at a called meeting next Thursday.

Cherokee County residents could possibly see a drop in their property tax bills.

The Cherokee County Commission on Tuesday unanimously approved rolling back its general fund, fire district and parks bond millage rates going into fiscal year 2014.

Broken down, the rates would be:

  • From 5.825 to 5.793 for the general fund
  • From 3.394 to 3.370 for the fire district
  • From .780 to .776 for the parks bond.
The total rate would go from 9.999 to 9.947 mills. The rate, along with the millage rate established by the Cherokee County Board of Education, will be formally adopted during a called meeting at 6 p.m. July 25.

Chief Financial Officer Janelle Funk said the average home in Cherokee County is worth around $163,500, and the average homeowner should expect to pay around $621 in county property taxes.

The rates would also allow for the county to include a 3 percent cost of living adjustment for employees in its fiscal year 2014 budget. The rollback rate would also require commissioners to delay two major parks bond projects until 2015.
