Cherokee Tax Measure OK'd

If signed into law, voters would be asked to consider a referendum to eliminate the county government portion of the property tax on homeowners through the collection of a one penny sales tax.

A passed the Georgia Senate today

Senate Bill 514, if signed into law, would allow the to ask voters to consider a referendum to eliminate the county government portion of the property tax on homeowners through the collection of a one penny sales tax known as the Homestead Option Sales Tax.

Supporters say it would provide significant tax relief to homeowners while making sure that everyone using county services contributes to the payment of those services.

“This measure could ultimately earn Cherokee County the distinction of having some of the lowest property taxes in the state for homeowners,” said Georgia Senate Majority Leader Chip Rogers (R-Woodstock), the sponsor of the legislation. “Taking the tax burden off homeowners and ensuring it is spread among all who travel and work in our County is fair. I join with our County Commission in this major effort to reduce taxes on our local citizens.”
