Community Says Goodbye to Soldier

Army Spc. Gary Lee Nelson III: Jan. 23, 1991-April 5, 2011

The Woodstock community showed its support for one of its own today as people lined the streets from St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, site of the funeral, to the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, where Army Spc. Gary Lee Nelson III was buried. Hundreds were dressed in patriotic attire, waving flags and holding passionate signs, as their hearts went out to the 20-year-old's family, who mourned their loss.

The family did not lose just a loving son and friend, but a member of the U.S. Army. Nelson died in Iraq on Tuesday, April 5, in a noncombat incident while serving his country.

Knowing the service Nelson carried out, Patriotic Guard Riders and veterans stood alongside Woodstock residents to help the grieving family. These supporters could be seen along the entire 16.3-mile route, including the bridges on I-575.
