Early Voters Slowly Trickle In

A little more than 300 people have cast ballots ahead of the Jan. 8, 2013, special election.

While the Cherokee County Elections and Voter Registration office hasn't seen much early voting traffic, local officials are still "impressed" with the turnout so far.

As of Friday, 310 voters had cast ballots ahead of the Jan. 8, 2013, special election to fill both the Georgia House District 21 and Georgia Senate District 21 seats.

Elections Supervisor Janet Munda said she's predicting a five percent turnout overall for the election, but added she's "more impressed and surprised with the turnout" so far.

Early voting was held all week at the elections office in Canton and will resume Dec. 27-28, on Dec. 31 and Jan. 2-4, 2013, between 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The office will be closed Dec. 24-26 and on Jan. 1 for the holidays.

Voters in the state house district will choose between Republicans Scot Turner, Brian Laurens, Kenneth Mimbs and Democrat Natalie Bergeron.

Senate District 21 voters will have their choice of State Rep. Sean Jerguson (R-Holly Springs) or Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Brandon Beach.

Only voters in the 29 out of 42 county precincts that cover both seats can cast ballots for the election. Voters can click here to see which precincts will cast ballots in the election.

The election scheduled for 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday Jan. 8, 2013 at those selected precincts.

Munda noted they've had a surge in requests absentee ballots. She said just on Thursday, the office mailed out 170 ballots.

"I hope I am pleasantly surprised and see more (voters) turn out," she added.

Munda said there have been no major problems at the office, other than "confused" voters who thought their precinct would be participating in the special election.
