IRS: 'Where's My Refund?' Getting Income Tax Attention

The IRS says it's getting high traffic on its online “Where's My Refund?” tool.

The deadline to file 2012 income tax returns isn't until April 15, but taxpayers appear to be filing early and are already asking, "Where's my refund?"

“Due to the large number of inquiries and to avoid service disruptions, the IRS strongly urges taxpayers to only check on their refunds once a day,” the IRS said, according to a report by Accounting Today.

“IRS systems are only updated once a day, usually overnight, and the same information is available whether on the Internet, IRS2go smartphone app or on IRS toll-free lines. While 'Where's My Refund?' is updated nightly, your account will not change that frequently.”

Have you already filed your 2012 tax return? What was your experience? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

According to the report, nine out of 10 taxpayers typically receive refunds in fewer than 21 days when they use e-file with direct deposit.

The IRS offers the following information to help taxpayers with refund questions:

  • Have the right tax information ready before using any of the IRS refund tools. This includes Social Security number, filing status and refund amount.
  • You don't need to check “Where's My Refund?” more than once a day, as your information will not change.
  • To avoid system delays, the best time to check on refunds is evening and weekends.
  • There is no need to call the IRS about your refund, as the telephone service has the same information that is available on the “Where’s My Refund?” tool.

We had plans to put down on a new home and start a family business. Waited on IRS lost out on new home. Price went up. Guy sold the equipment we where to buy to get started. Now In the dark cold house about to be kicked out with 3 kids. Both of us been laid off at work. Some caring government for the people. Trade places with me government. Fill a poor mans boots! We been waiting 60 days now and not a word. Wtf!!! I won't interest my self. The government is to be for the people by the people. Instead it's who got the most money stands and words are loudest. We don't get paid and or get the boot if we go to work and ack like our leaders. Should they be paid? We all have a place and a job we do it not bull shit around and changing the world takes even the little mans voice. Remember this year voters we all have the power to make a change and show what the words We The People By The People For The People means. Put a poor man on top not no one who says they know where we all come from. No Money For The Government They Don't Do There Job!
