More Trails Coming To Woodstock

The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners last night awarded a bid to build new multi-use trails in the city of Woodstock.

The city of Woodstock could soon expand its trail network.

The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday unanimously voted to award a bid to Georgia Development Partners, LLC of Atlanta to build two sets of multi-use trails throughout the city. County Chairman Buzz Ahrens was not present.

The county received nine proposals to build the trails, but Georgia Development Partners was the "lowest responsible bidder" with its proposal, according to county officials.

The cost of the project is $999,939.29 and the funding would be taken out of Woodstock's $5 million portion of the $90 million parks bond county voters approved in 2008.

The Downtown Spur trail, situated west of downtown, will run south from the new Market Street at its intersection with Elm Street and will connect with the Noonday Creek trail. That trail will then run south toward Highway 92 at Noonday Creek.

The trail will run west of Main Street and alongside the creek.

Construction could start some time in January and the project could be completed by fall 2013.

The county approved awarding the bid contingent upon the city obtaining all the necessary easements before construction starts. The city would be responsible for paying for signage and furnishings, which would also be funded by the city's portion of the parks bond.

The two trails are part of the city's Greenprints Trail initiative, which would create an expansive multi-use trail network throughout the city. The first and only portion of the trail, the Trestle Rock trail at Olde Rope Mill Park, is a paved half-mile portion that runs along Little River.

Along with the multi-use trails, the city also has its Taylor Randahl Memorial Mountain Bike Trails at the park, which encompass several miles of trails ranging from beginner to advanced use.

A not-for-profit organization, Greenprints Alliance, has been created to raise money to fund the construction of the trail network.
