New GA License Plate Unveiled

The license plates will be digital with a flat surface.

Georgia's new general issue license plate tag was selected with a digital upgrade with benefits for the state and drivers.

Gov. Nathan Deal, Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and Department of Revenue Commissioner Doug MacGinnitie unveiled the plate designed by Linda Sosebee of Forsyth with 34,154 votes in the .

The new design will be digital with a flat surface having financial benefits for the state being less expensive to produce, will have easier identification for law enforcement and will allow drivers the option to have their plates delivered to them.

“After hundreds of thousands of votes were cast, we are pleased to announce the winning design,” Deal said in a news release. “All of the semifinalists submitted great designs that would reflect well on our state, but the winning plate was the clear favorite among voters. I congratulate Linda Sosebee on being named the winner.”

The second-placed design, also Sosebee's, received 15,380 votes.

Deal said taxpayers will not incur any added expense for production of the new license plates that is scheduled to begin production in the fall and will also have the option of selecting a plain tag. During the owner’s registration period, the department will begin replacing existing license plates once the plate has exceeded the minimum five-year life as set forth by the Georgia Code.
